JEEZUS! is the smash hit debut from award-winning, migrant-led company Alpaqa. After taking a sold-out Edinburgh Fringe by storm in 2025 and a critically acclaimed Scaled-Up run at New Diorama Theatre in London, the show is now embarking on a UK tour. This time it is hotter, sweatier, and even more unhinged.

In 1990s Peru, a brutal military coup ushers in a decade of dictatorship under the rule of Alberto Fujimori. In the home of General José and his devoted wife María, altar boy Jesús prepares diligently for his first communion. But as the biggest day of his adolescent life approaches, the hot man on the cross makes him feel something…unholy.

Catholic guilt collides with unrepentant queerness in this sinful, heart-pounding mix of live music, dark humour, and Latin heat. If Bo Burnham, Bad Bunny, and Bertolt Brecht had a baby, this would be it.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

This show is not here to mock religion. It’s here to wrestle with it—with all its contradictions, ecstasies, hypocrisies, and power. I grew up in a part of South America where religion was more than dogma; it was a pillar of identity. A language for love, for family, for community. But like many queer people, I learned early that that love came with conditions. That faith could be a door. Or a wall.

This show is absurd, joyful, and brutal. It’s also a love letter: to queerness, to myth, to the kids who thought they were going to hell. I wrote it with my real-life partner, Guido, and we perform it together as a two-person act of divine mischief and radical tenderness. At its heart, it’s not really about God. It’s about the stories we inherit, the bodies we live in, and the miracles we make for ourselves. Bringing this vision to the stage has been a lesson in perseverance, patience, humility, and grace. A religious experience, for sure. The journey of JEEZUS! began in 2019 as a pair of two-minute plays for my show The Dirty Thirty. What started as a brief exploration of religious iconography slowly took root: I spent 2020 imagining the world, 2021 talking it into existence, and 2022 laying the writing’s building blocks.

PRODUCTION HISTORY

By 2023, we debuted a work-in-progress at CPT titled Jeezus! Fucking Christ, an autobiographical monologue featuring just one song and Guido’s guitar. The audience’s reaction told us everything we needed to know: we were onto something.

Throughout 2024, the project snowballed from an acoustic cabaret at The Pleasance to a full-scale musical for Brixton House’s Housemates Festival.

Winning the Untapped Award in 2025 led to an Edinburgh run beyond our wildest dreams. It was there we realized this wasn't the end goal, but the beginning of a second chapter. Now, in 2026, we’ve gone bigger and better, elevating the design, adding new songs, and bringing a live musician on stage to complete the vision.
